Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii

The Queen Charlotte Islands are a fisherman’s paradise! Enjoy unsurpassed beauty while saltwater or freshwater fishing year round.

For those of you who enjoy fresh seafood, take a stroll down to the Fisherman's Wharf. The local fishermen are known for having many interesting "fish" stories. If you prefer to catch your own supper, you can charter boats to go salmon or halibut fishing, go river fishing, or go out to the beach and try for crabs, razor clams, or scallops. But, before you go, be sure to stop in or call the local Department of Fisheries Office to check on seasons, limits and the licensing requirements involved.

Graham Island

1. Honna River -
Located four miles west of Queen Charlotte City, this river offers an early spring steelhead run and cutthroat trout during the summer and fall months.Accessible by car from Masset or Queen Charlotte City.

2. Tlell River - Thirty miles north of Queen Charlotte City and 14 miles south of Port Clements, this river offers excellent, large coho salmon during September and October.Large dolly varden trout can be caught in July.Good cutthroat trout fishing in July and August, possession limit of 2 during this time.From September 1 to June 30, cutthroat fishing is limited to catch and release only, below highway 16 bridge.

3. Yakoun River - This is the largest river on Graham Island and can be reached from Port Clements or Queen Charlotte City by private logging roads.There is an Angling Closure between Yakoun Lake and the Old Charlotte Bridge from October 1st to April 30th.The Yakoun River provides a good coho run from September through October and good fishing for resident rainbow, dolly varden, and cutthroat trout all year round. Cutthroat trout is catch and release only from October 1st to April 30th, at other times the possession limit is two.There are steelhead runs from October to March.

4. Mamin River - Eight miles west of Port Clements, this river supports a good run of large coho salmon from September 15th to October 15th. Also a fair run of steelhead from January to March.

5. Ian Lake and Ain River - Good fishing for cutthroat to three pounds in the outlet and also in the lake.

Moresby Island

1. Copper River -
This river produces sea-run cutthroat in May, June and July, and dolly varden to three pounds in May, June and July.

Coho run from mid-September to mid-October. Accessible by car from Sandspit.There is a seasonal closure from Skidegate Lake, downstream to the second bridge(6kilometres), above tidal boundary from February 1st to May 31st.

2. Deena River - Has a good steelhead run during the early spring months.Good coho fishing in October and November. Seasonal closure at bridge 5 km above the tidal boundary from February 1st to May 31st.

3. Pallant River - This river flows out of Mosquito Lake and has a good steelhead run in the winter and spring months.It is accessible from Sandspit by logging road. Seasonal closure below signs, 100m above and below fish fence August 1st to October 31st.

4. Mosquito Lake - Provides cutthroat to three pounds and dolly varden to ten pounds.Accessible by approximately 24 miles of logging road from Sandspit.

5.Skidegate Lake - This lake offers cutthroat to two pounds during the spring, early summer and fall months.Skidegate Lake is located about 15 miles south of Sandspit by logging roads.

6. Mathers Lake - This lake offers cutthroat fishing occasionally during the summer. It is accessible only by chartered aircraft.Charters may be arranged through the Harbour Air office in Sandspit.Guiding services available for fishing and hunting.

NOTE:Most of the previously mentioned fishing spots are accessible only through private logging roads.Sportsmen should contact Cascadia Forest Products at Juskatla or JS Jones at Sandspit for access information

Be Careful! Deer are in abundance on the Queen Charlotte Islands. You will be sure to spot at least a few when travelling by vehicle.
